Home Safety
Whether you live in an old house or a new one, make sure it's as safe as it can be. Consumer Reports points out some things you can do to safeguard your home.

Keep a fire extinguisher on each level. One should be available within 40 feet from any point in the house.

If you have fuel-burning appliances or a fireplace, you should have a carbon monoxide detector near bedrooms. Additional detectors may be useful in living areas or in your garage.

Smoke detectors should be no more than 10 years old and there should be at least one on every level. Be sure to check the batteries often--and replace them at least once a year.

An alarm that activates a siren or alerts a monitoring service is suggested for protection against intruders. Remember, however, that although a professionally installed alarm system can give you peace of mind, it may cost more than a burglar might steal.

When you go out of town, use lighting timers and stop newspaper and mail delivery, so the house looks occupied.
