Lead Paint Rules
Federal regulations requiring sellers or lessors of residential dwellings to disclose the presence of known lead-based paint went into effect September 6, 1996, for owners of more than four residential dwellings, and December 6, 1996, for owners of one to four residential dwellings.

Sellers and landlords must give buyers and renters a federal pamphlet titled Protect Your Family From Lead in Your Home. Homebuyers have a ten-day period to conduct an inspection or risk assessment at their own expense. Certain language must be included in sales contracts and leasing agreements to ensure that disclosure and notification actually take place.

There are several categories of housing not included. However, most private and public housing built before 1978 is included. To obtain copies of the regulation and the pamphlet, call the National Lead Information Center at 800 424-LEAD.
