Leave Home Real estate agents ask sellers to leave and take their pets with them when potential buyers are viewing the property. There are good reasons why:
The house should be the sole focus of attention. The owners' presence can be distracting, and it's hard for buyers to mentally move into a house while the people who own it are present.
Buyers who are seriously considering a house will often make critical comments about the property. But if the owners are there, buyers will seldom voice their objections. Thus agents don't have an opportunity to point out remedies, and the sale can be lost.
It's best if owners take their pets with them when they leave. Not all buyers like pets. If you can't take them, the pets should be securely penned up. A showing can be wrecked by a dog who's protecting the house from strangers. And it doesn't help sell a home if a pet escapes and the agent--and the prospective buyer--must race around the neighborhood trying to find it.
