Manufactured Homes According to the National Association of Home Builders, manufactured housing now accounts for almost a quarter of the nation's new homes.
The three most common types are: Panelized homes which are built from preconstructed panels ranging from 4 to 40 feet wide, often with doors and windows already installed. Modular homes, which are 90% complete when they leave the factory and are shipped in sections. And mobile homes, which are the most familiar type.
Factory-built homes allow builders to cut costs because they can build year round, cut losses from theft and damage, and reduce waste. Customers can specify floor plans, room sizes, and details like interior and exterior trim, just as they can in stick-built homes.
Most manufactured homes are erected in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina, and Georgia--because that's where most of the factories are located. According to ""USA Today,"" manufactured homes now account for half the new housing in those states.
