Save Cooling Dollars Want to save money this summer? Just as a tune-up helps your car run better, proper maintenance of your air conditioner can save as much as 20% on cooling costs and extend the life of your equipment.
Clean the outside condensing unit and make sure it is free of dirt and debris. Check filters regularly and clean or change them when needed. Have your system professionally checked yearly. Set your thermostat at the highest temperature at which you can be comfortable. For every degree you raise your setting, you save two percent, or more, on your bill. Close window shades, draperies or blinds to keep heat outside on sunny days. Schedule dishwashing, laundry and cooking during cooler times of the day. Use the exhaust fan in your bathroom during showers and baths and for a few minutes afterward to remove humidity. Use ceiling fans. They can help you feel comfortable and allow a higher setting for your air conditioner thermostat.
