Warm and Safe, Part III According to the Conservation and Renewable Energy Inquiry and Referral Service, the typical American home has so many air leaks and cracks that if they were combined into one large space, you could shoot a basketball through it.
Those leaks cost energy dollars. But, you can find and fix most of them yourself at low cost. Start by looking for the obvious--cracked window panes, gaps around windows and doors, and noticeable drafts near mail slots and exhaust fans. Check to see if light shines around door frames. Look at the space between window frames and their sashes. Most leaks can be fixed with caulking and weather-stripping.
If you suspect a more serious problem, have a professional energy auditor check your house.
